Kalmthoutse Heide
Located on the border with the Netherlands, the Kalmthoutse Heide is one of the oldest and largest nature reserves in Flanders. This vast 6,000-hectare area is part of the Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide and is known for its rich biodiversity, with numerous rare animal and plant species.
Popular with walkers, the nature reserve offers spectacular scenery, especially in August and September when the heather blooms and the heath turns purple.
Protected area
The area falls under the Natura 2000 network, which ensures maximum protection of its sensitive habitats and species. Management measures are essential to maintain this biodiversity. The new 42-metre-high fire tower offers great views over the moors and is also used for fire detection and communication.
