Bobbejaanland

The origin of Bobbejaanland lies in the musical career of singer-guitarist Bobbejaan Schoepen, who was looking for a permanent home to settle down after fifteen years of international touring.[1] In 1959 he bought a 30-ha swampy domain – the ‘Abroek’ – in Lichtaart (Kasterlee), a quiet village in the Kempen region. The neighbours all thought he was crazy, but it turned out he had big plans with the place.[1][2][3] He had the site dredged, built a 1,200-seat theatre hall and dug out a swimming pond with 2.2 kilometres of beach next to it. On 31 December 1961 the park was officially opened by Bobbejaan Schoepen himself and his wife Josée Jongen.
